HOT COFFEE

On a cold morning I tried to warm up in a small restaurant in Leuven. When the student worker brought my hot coffee, I said: "You are a good person!!"

With a big smile he replied: "Yes, I think so!"

But when I asked him what standard he used to call himself (or anything or anyone else) good or bad, there was a moment of silence. Fortunately he was smart enough to realize immediately that if no absolute standard exists, his judgment about himself would be very subjective.

And from that it appears that popular worldviews that assume subjectivity and the non-existence of absolute truth have no basis for morality. That should certainly make us think…
